Birth plans enable women to communicate their preferences and goals

With nearly 30 years of experience in obstetrics, I have learned that no two pregnancies, births, or patients are exactly alike. This is never more obvious than when I review birth plans with my expectant mothers.

Birth plans are a wonderful way to communicate your preferences and goals.

A birth plan is a written outline of your preferences for labor, delivery, and postpartum care. It may include things you hope will occur during your birth experience, as well as interventions or procedures you would prefer to avoid. A birth plan can be a helpful way to communicate your hopes and expectations with your healthcare team.

Here, at Premier Women’s Care of Southwest Florida, we enjoy reviewing your birth plan with you. We respect your preferences and encourage discussion about your goals. We have found that many of the items our patients include in birth plans tend to reflect routine aspects of labor and delivery.

However, some birth plan requests may not be supported by current medical evidence and may put the mother and baby at risk for adverse outcomes. In these situations, we will share our concerns, and work with you to develop a plan that prioritizes safety. Also, pregnancy and labor and delivery can be unpredictable. We will try to help you develop plans if an unforeseen circumstance arises. It is hard to plan for these situations, and adjustments to the birth plan may be necessary in the moment.

When plans change, it is normal for mothers to feel frustrated. If this happens in your pregnancy, then we encourage you to talk about your experience and share your feelings. Your doctor or midwife can help explain your medical conditions. Understanding this can often bring clarity, reassurance, and peace of mind.

Every pregnancy and birth journey is different. There is no right or wrong way to become a mother.  Regardless of the path taken, our shared goal is always a healthy mother and a healthy baby.
