Integrative medicine combines conventional treatments with natural remedies

by Heather Auld, MD

As a physician, I take a holistic approach to medicine that offers patients the best of mainstream medicine along with the healing power of natural herbs and plants, which have been used for millennia to restore and improve health.

My grandfather, the only physician in his rural South Dakota county, used herbal medicines in his practice long before antibiotics were available. But it wasn’t until many years later, as a practicing obstetrician-gynecologist, that I took a professional interest in integrative and functional medicine when my own patients began coming to me asking about vitamins and supplements.

In 2011, I decided to enroll in a two-year fellowship at the University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine in Tucson, Arizona, which changed the way I practice medicine.

Since becoming specialized in integrative and functional medicine, in addition to gynecology, I still use conventional medicine as a base. But I approach each new patient by looking at her lifestyle, the food she eats, and how herbs could improve her health. The best quality supplements and herbs are often highly effective and cause fewer side effects than pharmaceuticals.

To help patients with their health issues and wellness goals, I apply my extensive background from decades in obstetrics and gynecology, naturopathic medicine, and nutrition, as well as integrative medicine. I believe that a combination of traditional and holistic approaches offers the best outcomes for patients.

I start with non-pharmaceutical methods and listen to patients, letting them choose their health goals and helping them achieve those goals by empowering them to take charge of their health.

I apply this comprehensive approach to a range of gynecologic conditions and health problems, especially focusing on hormones in pre- and post-menopausal women and non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation.
