Since June of 2025, Premier Women’s Care of Southwest Florida has been offering diagnostic mammography and breast ultrasound as part of our enhanced breast imaging services for our patients.

We had always offered convenient access to 3D mammography in our offices. But now, when the screening mammogram requires additional follow-up, that next step can be performed in our office as well. A follow-up mammogram, often referred to as a diagnostic mammogram, may be needed due to inconclusive results or a visible abnormality. By doing it in our office, we can schedule our patients more quickly and efficiently.

Diagnostic mammograms and breast ultrasounds are sometimes performed for reasons other than an inconclusive or abnormal mammogram. Breast pain, nipple discharge, breast skin changes, a palpable mass, and concern about breast cancer are all common reasons to order diagnostic testing. Once the diagnostic testing is performed, the next step in treatment can be determined. The faster the diagnostic imaging can be performed, the faster the diagnosis can be made.

It’s natural to feel concerned if your physician orders a diagnostic mammogram, but keep in mind that the findings are likely to be benign.

Along with our 3D mammograms, the diagnostic mammograms and breast ultrasounds will be performed and evaluated by our team of breast-specialized, board-certified radiologists and our specially trained mammogram technicians and breast ultrasonographers. When the radiologist reports the results of the imaging, your ob/gyn will contact you with the next step in the plan of care.

The addition of diagnostic breast imaging to our practice will provide our patients with seamless breast care and is part of our ongoing effort to ensure the best possible care for our patients and our community.
